Best version I confess that I have long confused this film with 'Humpback' 1997, which did not make much impression on me. But in fact, these two adaptations are completely different! It is 'Le bossu' looks old-fashioned (assuming that many may like it) and more like a comedy. The villain there, played by Fabrice Lucini, was difficult for me to take seriously - IMHO, Lukini is still an actor, primarily a comic. Well, here. Gonzag Yvon Baca is awesome! I doubt, of course, that the author of the novel represented the negative character as such a handsome man (even in this film, his imaginary unattractiveness is mentioned in the replicas of the characters more than once), but I like this option much more... let’s say, because the leitmotif of the story is
the opposition of the external and internal ugliness, and an ugly villain with a strong limp, logically, was not at all appropriate. Another thing - such a slender, elegant gentleman with a slight defect! You can at least appreciate the resilience of the heroine, who for so many years rejected a stubborn admirer. The actor perfectly played in one face and cold-blooded killer, and passionate lover. I also really liked the theme of servants’ devotion – there is a direct samurai loyalty to the masters on both sides! The hero of Christian Eck is sympathetic, although, in fairness, I must say that the plot could be revealed and better.
In general, a rather exciting adventure movie with well-staged sword fights and memorable characters. I recommend it.
