A movie about the dangers of messianism. In the picture there are two: religious and technological. The latter is represented by the main character, and the first is the hero of the second plan. As one might expect, both Messiahs will not love each other and will harm each other. The film tells the story of Alli, who is tired of American culture and the threat of nuclear war, and so with his family goes to the woods to survive there. At the same time, Alli shows herself as a talented engineer and organizer. Everything goes well, but gradually Alli reaches self-destruction in an attempt to bring to the natives a new knowledge about the world that can give them nothing, but can only shock. However, there are competitors who have other knowledge, which is also not able to give anything, and can shock even more.
The Mosquito Coast is a film of its era. About the threat of nuclear war, about the absurdity of human attempts to survive, constantly keeping someone else on the gun ... and that humanity is better to breathe out and stop thinking about how to finally and irrevocably defeat the “bad”. And also, of course, the old idea that cultured Europeans, once they were savage, would not acquire natural simplicity, but rather make natives cultural barbarians. However, the subtext itself is buried quite far. In the center of the plot is the drama of one man who can not reconcile with the world, and the world cannot accommodate it. Unfortunately, to my taste, the drama turned out to be a bit smeared.
