Back in the green years, I loved this movie. But over time, it became clear that the humor of the film was designed for a specific target audience, which had to look at the film from the other side. To give credit to the director, as for the character Goldie Hawn, he masterfully worked with the emotions of the viewer, accurately changing them in the right direction. At first, Joanna is disgusted. Then her misadventures provoke gloating - deserved. Finally, as her character changes, she evokes strong sympathy. In all its transformations, the filmmakers play on the perceptions of the American working class, which is unusual, as standard cinema is shot for the middle class.
The rich in the film are shown cardboardly and ridiculously. Are the rich doing nothing but wearing cartoonish outfits, posing for pictures with dogs, yelling at servants and unable to sit down without help? If they were cynical, greedy, evil, calculating, one could still understand. But how, with such stupidity and insignificance, do they manage to stay at the top of the social ladder? This stereotypical and silly image of the rich is apparently intended to give the American poor a sense of moral superiority. They're poor, but they're real people. Later, we see Joanna unsuccessfully trying to light the gas or wash clothes. It’s obvious that American housewives have to laugh – haha, rich bitch can’t do such simple things. Having tried the harsh life of an American layman, and given the opportunity to choose between wine or beer, Joanna, of course, will choose a beer that will open up against the furniture standing around. Well, it's clear that beer is better. The action ends with a situation of choice - wealth and luxury or maternal happiness in a standard American large family. The choice is obvious. Family is the real wealth.
Summing up, the comic of situations is designed for the perception of the average worker and housewife. This is the kind of humour produced in Hollywood. Surprisingly, the assessments of American and Russian viewers differed markedly. The film is much better than IMDB. And it's hard to say why. Obviously, the Americans do not like something in the film. Maybe he has some quality mark. Once again, the production is good and the characters are cute. But I don't like the specifics of humor.
