Pretty little I’ve seen Brazilian films, but the ones I’ve seen are usually impressive, so the 2019 Bacurau/Bacurau co-production, directed by Juliano Dornel and Kleber Mendoza Filho, also made an impression. The film does not pretend to be real, although it can be seen a lot that can be associated with what we see in the world. The action takes place, as they say, in the near future in a small Brazilian village, lost somewhere in the outback. Despite the fact that we see the signs of modernity – people have smartphones, tablets, a computer in the classroom with a huge screen and Internet access, they live by their own traditions. Everything would be fine, but for a long time the local authorities blocked access to the dam, so residents are experiencing difficulties with water supply. The film begins with the scene of the funeral of the oldest resident of the village, which gathers all residents, the ceremony is held in accordance with local traditions. Her granddaughter Teresa arrives and meets at the funeral with her former, at one time proclaimed the best shooter, who collaborated with the local revolutionary Lunga, who is now being intensively sought by the authorities, but the locals, knowing where he is, do not extradite him. After some time, the teacher discovers that their village has disappeared from the Internet maps on which he wanted to show his students. A mayor who is running for a new term arrives, no resident goes out to meet him, after a while he sends "help" - expired groceries, old books and uncertified medicines. And then the horror begins. First. A water carrier arrives with a shot tank, then all its inhabitants are found killed on the farm, then killed and found. Finally, we see those who do all this – a very motley group of murderers, consisting of quite decent supposedly people, amusing themselves with killing other people. They have some disagreements with each other, but in the end, they all share a passion for murder, sometimes unrealized in the past, which they now happily realize. And then the people unite to fight this evil, in the end they win. But as Lunga says, this is only the beginning. Of course, such films do not look easy, they really show us a lot of murders, it is shot in the style of old Westerns, probably, but modern methods. It makes you wonder how many evil spirits exist among people, both in the form of small groups and in the form of large ones. And whether each leader of such a group will be punished (quite cruelly, I must say) as the members and leader of the group Michael, who was given permission to do so by the same mayor who would also be punished. Alas, not all such figures will be punished, because these documents are designed in such a way that it is impossible to prove their presence in the country. The film won the Jury Award at the Cannes Festival in 2019.
