There are a lot of movies/books out there (and there will probably be more) that tell the story of a boy embarking on the path of becoming a man. The beauty is that each story is as unique as our personal experience. Because, by and large, each of us is a small universe. In the picture Midnineties (the name pretending to be a “midnight” pun), with all the external simplicity of the plot (the guy hangs out with the boys on skateboards to feel like an adult and independent), many sensitive topics for almost each of us are touched upon: the relationship of the older and younger brothers who received radically different experiences of upbringing, the desire to feel part of the pack, the first sexual experiments and psychedelic experiments. And there is a wonderful message: even in the company of dudes from the ghetto under the guise of pontificates and “concepts” there is a place for the ability to genuine friendship, compassion and responsibility for another, in other words, to a sense of camaraderie.
