Having made a number of efforts, I watched such a popular and much praised Russian TV series “Home Arrest”, directed by Peter Buslov, screenwriters Semyon Slepakov and Maxim Tukhanin. I will immediately say that I have nothing against the genre of black comedy, nor against banter, nor against satire and other related genres, on the contrary, I often watch films in this genre and, I hope, am able to appreciate successful works in these genres. But now I watched this series and experienced in some way a sense of awkwardness, and not admiration for the witty banter, which I often had to read in downright enthusiastic reviews. This kind of satire on the modern totally corrupt bureaucracy and other residents of Russia very rarely caused the desire to laugh, because it also demonstrated the dreary stupidity of all segments of the population, but this is not funny at all. There is not a single positive character in the film, perhaps there are not so many of them in life, but still there are sometimes among the population (simply among ordinary people, but here it is the population) and smart people, and there is no such thing, despite some seemingly not very negative actions of individual characters. In addition, alcoholism, bad taste, the cave level of life of the so-called “ordinary people” in our time, a rather peculiar understanding of the relationship between men and women, meanness and falseness at all levels do not inspire any special hope for the future in absolutely everyone, and will pull out of a certain substance one part of the body, then another, although they can sometimes break through to higher positions and even show glimpses of intelligence. Despite the supposedly happy ending, there is no hope, because we remember that they all worked before, adults do not change, this is an axiom, although they can change the pattern of their behavior under the influence of circumstances. Perhaps the authors of the film wanted to portray this, but it seemed to me that it could be done shorter, and the jokes could still move away from the Kvn-ov style and level, but this is not easy, because both Slepakov and Tukhanin are well-known Kvn-schikov. I won’t talk about the actors – what they were given, they played, in places even good. I do not pretend to be true, it is only my impression.
