There is a Brazilian director and producer Fernando Meirelles (Fernando Meirelles), my acquaintance with whom began in his time with a good film “Devoted Gardener”, continued with a great but very heavy film “City of God”, then there was a good film “Kaleidoscope of Love”. Interestingly, the themes and countries about which and in which he makes his films are very diverse from those that I watched, only in one film (City of God) the action takes place in Brazil. So in this film, he has already chosen a new theme and location, this is the film The Two Popes, 2019, the setting of which is mainly the Vatican. The plot is based on real events, as the titles say. Indeed, both characters are well known to us - this is Pope Benedict XVI, in the world Joseph Ratzinger (Anthony Hopkins), and the current Pope Francis, in the world of Jorge Bergoglio (Jonathan Price), how realistic their conversations, which make up the main part of the film, leave on the conscience of the author, in the end, the film is artistic. The film begins with the election of Pope Benedict and ends with the election of Pope Francis. And in the interval we see some events from the life of Bergoglio, about which he tells Ratzinger in his confession, where he appears in no better quality. And although we suspect that Ratzinger is not entirely conscientious, before our very eyes Bergoglio is guilty of only one sin concerning a pedophile priest, whose actions he overlooked. However, it is known that during the war he was first in the Hitler Youth, then served in the troops, at the end of the war deserted, but then did a little sitting. Not a word about this, while Bergoglio talks about his contacts with the junta in Argentina, although it seems that he went to it, trying to save his own, which he did not succeed at all, on the contrary, he only harmed them. Some people still remember him as Benedict in Italy was called a Nazi, that is, the past of both is not perfect. Bergoglio decided to resign, but Benedict did not accept his resignation, and resigned himself, the first in 600 years after the resignation of Pope Gregory XII. Before that, he did not want to hear about Bergoglio, but after their meeting and conversations, he reconsidered his attitude towards him. A couple of times we're shown footage of real dads. The film is very good, both actors play perfectly, watched with interest.
