When we watched the first series, we decided to call this genre surpunk. I mean, surrealism. Because it's not classic fantasy, it's not urban fantasy, it's not fiction, it's not a fairy tale for kids. It's an incredible mixture of everything. The series turned out to be fascinating, funny and in a good way (this is key). If you haven’t seen the original, but you’ve seen Adventure Time, it’s very similar in style and design.
The original One Piece somehow passed me by, and frankly, it was in anime format that I wouldn’t watch it anymore. But in this format I suddenly came. Of the Netflix adaptations, this one really worked.
The most important thing is not to start watching the series in serious ways. Do not try to look for iron logic in the way the described world works, as well as serious motivation in the actions of the characters. Each of the main characters is a big child who struggles with his children’s complexes and goes to his own childhood dream, trying to pretend to be an adult.
