I’ve always loved Wes Anderson’s films, so as soon as a subtitled version of his new film, Asteroid City 2023, appeared online, I immediately watched it and, alas, I was somewhat disappointed. The director, of course, remains true to himself - the film is very conditional both in content and in embodiment, visually very bright (sometimes too bright), famous actors are involved, but somehow disappoints with some secondary, and sometimes open declarativeness. We are shown how a new play by a famous playwright is put on stage, and the film itself is divided into actions and scenes, and sometimes the actors (especially the performer of one of the main roles in the production) leave the image and do something there in life, periods are very brief, in places we are shown some actions of the characters, in respect of which it is sometimes difficult to understand whether it is still a play or already life. The ending seems pretty good, at least in the play. The action takes place in a place called Asteroid City, although it is difficult to call it a city, since it is home to only 78 inhabitants. This is a place in the desert where an asteroid once fell, it is protected, every year in this place the Ministry of Defense conducts summing up some competitions among able schoolchildren, who are sometimes awarded grants. So now the parents brought there five smart people, each of whom receives a reward. Suddenly, the unexpected happens - during one event, an interplanetary ship unexpectedly descends from the sky, from which an alien comes out and takes an asteroid. After that, the government introduces restrictive measures in this place, no one can go anywhere, no information can be shared and all of them have to communicate somehow. There are a number of events, smart people, of course, come up with a way to share what happened with the world. In the process, the characters share with us sometimes “smart” thoughts, the freshness of which leaves much to be desired. It seemed to me that Anderson began to repeat himself a little, without a light inclusion of the current agenda, too, did not do. I assume that the way and what happens and what is shown to us in the film is done deliberately, the criticality is visible to the naked eye, but no longer causes much interest. So decide for yourself whether you will watch this movie.
