I watch a lot of Italian films, including those that are not very well known. In the process of viewing, I learned that many Italians at one time went not only to the United States, but also to other countries - for example, it turned out that South America was once one of the largest Italian diasporas, but because of the difficulties with moving, a lot of Italians settled in neighboring countries - France, Switzerland, although they dreamed of America, where dollars literally grow on trees, as they were told. Some people returned to Italy, but many stayed in these countries forever. The descendant of such Italians is the French director of Italian origin Alain Hugetto. After the death of his father Vincent, he decided to make a film about his ancestors, which he did not do during his father’s lifetime, because he thought that he would not welcome such a film. But he made not an ordinary, but an animated film, because he works in this genre. Interdit aux chiens et aux Italiens (2022)
Somewhere in the mountains lived the Ughetto family, their life was difficult, they were poor, so when their sons grew up, they went to work. Then the Libyan war began in 1911, the brothers were drafted into the army, then one of the brothers died, the older brother Luigi was already married, his first daughter was born, he hurried to marry and the second brother, after some time the First World War began, the brothers were again called up, the second brother died, Luigi was alone, who wanted to go to America, but it did not work out, although they had time to send their things there, but the ship sank, they were left with nothing, so they went to France, in Italy at this time fascism was already born. It was in France that they saw this announcement on the door of a cafe about dogs and Italians, treated with contempt, called pasta, although they did not hesitate to use their working hands. The family grew up, they had many children, unfortunately, during the flu epidemic, half of the family died out, then World War II began. It turns out that Italy managed to fight with France and even bombed nearby territories. But it also ended, the children grew up and began to disperse, even during the war, Luigi’s grandfather died, and his grandmother lived with them for quite a long time, on behalf of whom, mainly, the story is being told in the film.
I cannot say that the film is very outstanding, but it is not bad, to some extent informative and not made in the usual lately drawn style, no, it is a puppet film, shot frame-by-frame, which is a very difficult way of filming. I looked with interest.
