A significant part of the original book is devoted to the childhood of the hero and his life on the ship, the boy communicated with the dead. That's not in the movie. The plot itself is absolutely not exciting, boring, it does not contain any mysteries and surprises, for the most part of the plot, the characters go generally well, and there is nowhere to worry about them. Doctors-comprachikos win instantly, the Countess did almost nothing insidious and faded as a character, the Queen did not present any surprise, there was no exciting reshuffle as in the tale “Caliph for an hour”. Opportunities have not been exploited, conflicts are not acute, cruelty is too slick. No plot twists, no puzzles. Filmmakers have the ability to amplify remarkable moments in books, and here they seem to have been deliberately weakened. The image of the main character, which, according to the quote from the original, was simply ugly, in the film is so weak that I constantly asked myself - "So what?" Two small scars that could be covered with ordinary powder, and instead for some reason they were put on the contrary. The film gave the impression of a cheap children's version of a heavy classic, which is simply inappropriate.
