The ocean contains the history of all humanity. The sea holds all the voices of the earth and those that come from outer space. Water receives impetus from the stars and transmits it to living creatures. Water, the longest border in Chile, also holds the secret of two mysterious buttons which were found on its ocean floor. Chile, with its 2,670 miles of coastline and the largest archipelago in the world, presents a supernatural landscape. In it are volcanoes, mountains and glaciers. In it are the voices of the Patagonian Indigenous people, the first English sailors and also those of its political prisoners. Some say that water has memory. This film shows that it also has a voice. close

The co-founder of the Gamma press agency, Raymond Depardon, created this documentary of press photographers in Paris and their subjects by following the photographers around for one month, in October, 1980. In-between long hours waiting for a celebrity to emerge from a restaurant or a hotel, boredom immediately switches to fast action as the cameras click and roll when the person appears. The reaction to the gaggle of photographers is as varied as the people they often literally chase all around town. While some of the celebrities, such as Jacques Chirac who was mayor of Paris at the time, are perceived as comical caricatures, others are shown simply going about ordinary pursuits - including Catherine Deneuve, Gene Kelly, and Jean-Luc Godard. close

De leur côté, Georges et Dominique, la sœur de Marc, déjà parents de trois filles, affrontent sans inquiétude la quatrième grossesse de Dominique. A musical short film about the extermination of Roma by the Nazis during World War II. One of the first directorial works of Tony Gatlif and the first in which he addresses directly to gypsy themes. In fact, all those elements from which Gatlif will build his famous films in the future are already presented here: ethnographic documentary, fantastic musical “pressure”, attention to the dark pages of history (the Roma will be remembered in Swing as well), the fate and inner strength of a person; a fierce speech against social injustice.
Perhaps that is why the plot of the tape is extremely simple, even schematic. Roma are sitting in a concentration camp, behind barbed wire and trying to use flamenco – “song and dance” – to express their protest, to ignite themselves to fight. These expressive musical numbers, performed in the French-Spanish "narrhechia", however, are wordless. The first number is actually a protest. The second is the laconic statement “I am a gypsy.” The third song is based on the phrase “Run the gypsies, live the gypsies”. Thus, the nomadic image of gypsy life acquires the maximum weight from Gatlif, as the only possible form of existence, and “flight” becomes a life victory. Although, of course, it can be viewed melancholy as a defeat, a lack of strength to fight.
I don’t think the German overseers need translation either. These are monosyllabic orders. Their execution is clearly illustrated by the director. In addition, they are on the "heard" of anyone who has seen at least one picture of the horrors of World War II. close
