He writes a few columns for the Catholic paper, and soon workers are listening and the powerful are in an uproar. He's expelled from the Catholic party, so he starts the Christian Democrats and is elected to Parliament. St. Louis, 1986. For Chuck Berry's 60th, Keith Richards assembles a pickup band of Robert Cray, Joey Spampinato, Eric Clapton, himself and long-time Berry pianist, Johnnie Johnson. Joined on stage by Etta James, Linda Ronstadt and Julian Lennon, Berry performs his classic rock songs. His abilities as a composer, lyricist, singer, musician and entertainer are on display and, in behind-the-scenes interviews, are discussed by Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bruce Springstein, the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and others. There's even a rarity for Berry—a rehearsal. Archival footage from the early 1950s and a duet with John Lennon round out this portrait of a master. close

Ekaterina Maksimova ("Galatea"), Konstantin Zaklinsky ("Fuete"), Gali Abaidulov ("Perikola") in the ballet film by Alexander Belinsky "Chaplinian". “This film is to Chaplin’s music, based on Chaplin’s works, but not about Chaplin,” says director Alexander Belinsky. The hero of the picture is a “little” man, a variety artist, an antihero – a dictator ruling in one fictional state. Nowhere did we quote Chaplin’s great films, we wanted to preserve his spirit, his laughter, his touch, his characters and even his attributes and locations. In our work, we adhered to the main theme of Chaplin’s work – sympathy for the “little” person and tried to express this main idea by means of modern and classical choreography. The role of the diva variety diva and the favorite of the dictator in this film was performed by the famous ballerina Ekaterina Maksimova.Such character has not yet been among the stage and screen creations of the ballerina. But it is the TV screen that is especially generous with surprises and it is in the TV ballets that the still unknown facets of Maximova’s unique talent are revealed every time so unexpectedly. Courage and the ability to take risks in search of the new has always distinguished the work of Vladimir Vasiliev. The outstanding dancer and choreographer increasingly turns to directing and creating holistic artistic works. Now the same creative group "Anyuta", the same team of like-minded people united in the work on "Chapliniana". Gali Abaidulov, still a student who performed one of the main parts in Vasilyev’s Chekhov ballet masterpiece, plays two roles at once in Chaplinian – the all-powerful Dictator and the dreamer – the clown, on the confrontation of which the plot of the film is built. The name of Abaidulov is associated even with the birth of a new role - "artist of television ballet." "Chaplinian" - the thesis of Abaidulov, a graduate of the course Vasiliev and Maximova choreographer of GITIS. This is a very rare combination - co-creation in one film teachers and students. close

Against a set which has been designed in a Kafkaesque and claustrophobic way, Rybczynski has recreated a World of Kafka which corresponds well with Kafka's maze-like novels. It is an abstract and unpredictable world where Kafka himself moves between the scenes of his own stories, from America via The Castle to Metamorphosis, and The Trial is of course the frame story throughout. Rybczynski has chosen to portray Josef K as an alter ego. Other characters become members of his own family, which means that Rybczynski makes a kind of exemplary, depth psychological close reading of his work. close

A young girl and her mother both carry the scars of their experiences during the holocaust in this drama from Israel. In 1951, Aviya is a ten-year-old girl being raised by her single mother, Henya, in a small village in Israel. Henya is a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, and has come out of the experience considerably worse for wear; she's haunted by the memories of her past, and has become emotionally unstable. Circumstances for her and her daughter are hardly improved by the poverty of the newly wounded state of Israel, and their own difficult economic circumstances. Aviya, meanwhile, is obsessed with finding her missing father, and wonders if he might be the man who has just moved into their village. Henya, however, knows better, and knows why Aviya's father is never coming back to them. close
