Twenty years ago, the name of journalist Alexander Nevzorov was first heard in St. Petersburg. They didn't pay attention at first. But day after day, he, the host of 600 Seconds, went live, bringing the truth about his hometown to every home. Twenty years ago, the entire country switched to the Leningrad Canal for exactly 10 minutes. Nevzorov tore babies from the breasts of mothers, old people from dominoes, drunkards from drinking, housewives from borsch. All froze in torpor, hearing only the echo of a familiar voice. In those years, the rating of TV projects was measured by the number of letters that came to the editorial office. They were usually not read. They were counted. The rating of “Second” reached 90 percent. That is why the program got into the Guinness Book of Records. This record has never been repeated. Alexander Nevzorov mastered many spheres of activity: he was a novice in the monastery, a singer of the church choir (bass), an orderly in the hospital, a keeper in the museum, a loader, a stuntman, a mercenary ... close

Filmmaker Kevin Rafferty takes viewers to 1968 to witness a legendary college football game and meet the people involved, interweaving actual gridiron footage with the players' own reflections. Set in a small farming community in mid Wales, a place where Koppel's parents - both refugees - found a home. This is a landscape and population that is changing rapidly as small scale agriculture is disappearing and the generation who inhabited a pre-mechanised world is dying out. Much influenced by his conversations with the writer Peter Handke, the film maker leads us on a poetic and profound journey into a world of endings and beginnings; a world of stuffed owls, sheep and fire. close

Executive Producer Sean Penn presents "Witch Hunt," a gripping indictment of the American justice system told through the lens of one small town. Voters in Bakersfield, California elected a tough on crime district attorney into office for more than 25 years. During his tenure he convicted dozens of innocent working class moms and dads. They went to prison, some for decades, before being exonerated. He remains in office today. This story on a micro level mirrors what the US has experienced over the last eight years. When power is allowed to exist without oversight civil rights are in jeopardy. close

The authors of the film showed not only behind the scenes of political life, but also presented the famous politician, the first president of the Czech Republic, as an ordinary person.
A few weeks before the premiere, posters appeared on the streets of Prague inviting the viewer to watch a documentary about the first president of the Czech Republic. On them, Vaclav Havel is depicted in a suit and striped socks, with a polka dot tie and a favorite terrier. That is how the authors and producers of the film want to present the main character to the audience. close

Just before winter cloaks everything in the Arctic night, a few hours of daylight linger in late autumn in the village of Sumskoy Posad, one thousand kilometres north of Saint Petersburg, in Karelia, on the shores of the White Sea. Linked to the rest of the country by a vague muddy track and a stretch of railway line, the village lives in a suspended and mysterious dimension. This is the Russia of endless forests and potato fields. A few robust and uncompromising characters work calmly there, driven by no vital needs. This is a still happy and cold Russia. close

"Trouble the Water" takes you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen. Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist, is turning her new video camera on herself and her Ninth Ward neighbors trapped in the city. Weaving an insider's view of Katrina with a mix of verité and in-your-face filmmaking, it is a redemptive tale of self-described street hustlers who become heroes--two unforgettable people who survive the storm and then seize a chance for a new beginning. close
