Daniel Anker’s 90-minute documentary takes on over 60 years of a very complex subject: Hollywood’s complicated, often contradictory relationship with Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. The Americans are swiftly closing on Okinawa, an island just south of the Japanese mainland. The Imperial command sends top generals and several army more
The Americans are swiftly closing on Okinawa, an island just south of the Japanese mainland. The Imperial command sends top generals and several army divisions to defend it at all costs. The mission quickly degenerates as vital resources and troops are diverted to other islands. After a civilian evacuation ends in tragedy most of non-combatants are forced to remain on the island. Many convert to soldier status. Tokyo sends mixed messages that squander time and resources, as when they order the defenders to build an airstrip for aircraft that never come. The truth soon becomes obvious: the high command decides that the island cannot be held and effectively abandons the Okinawan defenders. When the Americans land many troops are deployed in the wrong places. As the slaughter mounts, a suicidal attitude takes hold. Okinawa becomes a death trap, for civilian volunteers and non-combatants as well. close

A documentary concerning the violent Italian 'poliziotteschi' cinematic movement of the 1970s which, at first glance, seem to be rip-offs of American crime films like DIRTY HARRY or THE GODFATHER, but which really address Italian issues like the Sicilian Mafia and red terrorism. Perhaps even more interesting than the films themselves were the rushed methods of production (stars performing their own stunts, stealing shots, no live sound) and the bleed-over between real-life crime and movie crime. close

He was 24 years old and his name was Caligula. The emperor was called in different ways: ruthless, criminal, cruel, infantile, pervert, scandalist, manipulator. He ruled the world’s strongest empire with sadistic brutality. He was vindictive, dangerous and irresponsible. Caligula strangled in bed 77-year-old sick and weakened Emperor Tiberius ...
The power of his terror lasted only 1,400 days, but even today everyone knows his name. Caligula is really evil in the flesh. He was very young when he came to the throne. The throne gave this inexperienced man full power and corrupted him. He entered the history book as one of the worst. Caligula's power over Rome was characterized by sexual deviations and extreme cruelty. Whether he was a madman or just a villain, Caligula remained an example of how limitless power disfigures a person. He truly became immortal, which he always longed for. Even today, 2,000 years after his reign of terror, he is infamous. The history of Caligula dates back to the first century AD, when another 20 years have not passed since the death of Christ.
This is a story about one of the most vile characters of the ancient world. After Caligula's death, the senate did everything to erase all memories of him. They declared a curse on his memory, inscriptions were erased, statues were dropped and smashed, any memory of the emperor was removed from public documents. They cursed his memory and cursed his image. But it was too late. Rome will never be the same again.
