At the center of the family drama “Father and Stranger” is the story of Diego and Valid, two different people who were brought together by chance in the clinic where their children are undergoing treatment. Diego, an employee of the Ministry of Justice in Rome, is the father of a mentally ill boy. Walid, his new acquaintance, is also treating his mentally retarded son here.
Walid’s appearance soon radically changes Diego’s life – based on platitudes, a new acquaintance teaches him simple things like getting along with his wife, loving his son, and getting better. Gradually, the friendship with Walid turns Diego’s familiar world, changing his notions of what is “normal” and what is not.
However, Walid, as it turns out, is not as simple as it might seem at the beginning of the film “Father and Stranger”. At the very least, the head of the Secret Service who visited Diego says his new friend is the key to the fragile peace balance between Italy and the Middle East. Walid's gone, but Diego doesn't know anything about him. But so did Valide himself. Who is he? A terrorist? A spy? An international criminal?
Torn between loyalty to his country and loyalty to a friend, the protagonist of the film “Father and a Stranger” decides to independently try to find Walid to save him from the corrupt police and the Arabs who pursue him.
The Father and the Foreigner (Il padre e lo straniero) is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Giancarlo De Cataldo. close

The documentary, Wild Horses and Renegades, chronicles the plight of America’s wild horses.
On the example of the story of the main character of his story, a majestic horse and his family who live in the Valley of Disappointment in Colorado, the filmmakers tell the bitter truth of the existence of these proud and beautiful animals. When the Bureau of Land Management separates a horse from his family, sending him to other lands, a truly mortal danger hangs over him. Defenders of wild horses are trying to bring the stallion back to his homeland.
With their film, its creators want to tell the world about the blatant mismanagement that reigns in the last wild state lands. The great symbol of the American Wild West in recent decades was literally on the verge of destruction. close

I AM is an utterly engaging and entertaining non-fiction film that poses two practical and provocative questions: what’s wrong with our world, and what can we do to make it better? The filmmaker behind the inquiry is Tom Shadyac, one of Hollywood’s leading comedy practitioners and the creative force behind such blockbusters as “Ace Ventura,” “Liar Liar,” “The Nutty Professor,” and “Bruce Almighty.” However, in I AM, Shadyac steps in front of the camera to recount what happened to him after a cycling accident left him incapacitated, possibly for good. Though he ultimately recovered, he emerged with a new sense of purpose, determined to share his own awakening to his prior life of excess and greed, and to investigate how he as an individual, and we as a race, could improve the way we live and walk in the world. close

Michael Shannon stars in the role of Herbert White, a character based on the poem of the same name by Frank Bidart. The story follows Herbert as he works in the lumber industry, supports his family, and stalks and murders women he picks up in town. While Herbert is not exactly sympathetic, viewers are allowed to enter the mind of a serial killer, and realize that most of the time he behaves like everyone else. Movies like “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer” have done this before, but to successfully position the audience inside the mind of a complex human monster in 14 short minutes is quite a feat. close

How does art survive in a time of oppression? During the Soviet rule artists who stay true to their vision are executed, sent to mental hospitals or Gulags. Their plight inspires young Igor Savitsky. He pretends to buy state-approved art but instead daringly rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artist's works and creates a museum in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the watchful eyes of the KGB. Though a penniless artist himself, he cajoles the cash to pay for the art from the same authorities who are banning it. Savitsky amasses an eclectic mix of Russian Avant-Garde art. But his greatest discovery is an unknown school of artists who settle in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution of 1917, encountering a unique Islamic culture, as exotic to them as Tahiti was for Gauguin. They develop a startlingly original style, fusing European modernism with centuries-old Eastern traditions. close

South America, Ukraine, France, India – The non-fiction documentary “Solutions locales pour un désordre global” appeals to scientists, farmers, and natural food producers around the world who give their views on their success in working with the land.
The Earth as a living ecosystem in Private Solutions to General Disorder is compared to soil sterilized and destroyed by pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, machine-treating, where new crops grow solely through new doses of chemical stimulants.
In this vicious circle, food becomes dependent on the oil industry, it is barely edible, and at times even life-threatening. This approach to the land as an enemy, the conduct of barbaric methods of management becomes the subject of criticism, irony and complaints in many layers – social, economic, agronomic – and is the focus of the film “Private Solutions to General Disorder”. close
