The original premise was that Charles Boyer, Ida Lupino, David Niven, and Dick Powell would take turns starring in episodes. However, several other performers took the lead from time to time, including Ronald Colman and Joan Fontaine.
Blake Edwards was among the writers and directors who contributed to the series. Edwards created the recurring character of illegal gambling house operator Willie Dante for Dick Powell to play on this series. The character was later revamped and spun off in his own series starring Howard Duff, then-husband of Lupino.

Events in the series “Theater of the Doomed” unfold in a provincial town, where the former investigator, and now retired Colonel Alexander Zakharov (Sergei Nikonenko), comes. Culturally spend the evening he goes to the local theater, where put the play Ostrovsky “Bespridannitsa”. The culmination of the performance is the shot of an angry Karandyshev, killing Larisa Ogudalova. The gunshot sounds, the audience applauds, and here it turns out that the actress who played the role of Larissa is really dead.
The theater troupe is in shock. The investigation begins, in which the young investigator Zverev (Oleg Savkin) helps Zakharov. The heroes of the film “Theater of the Doomed” do not yet know what a terrible discovery awaits them ahead: it turns out that an unknown killer has made his own scenario of events, and according to him, all the actors of the troupe are doomed to death. close

The project was ultimately developed by Hubbell Robinson, a CBS vice president who received no screen credit on Playhouse 90 but is often described as its creator. close
