On everything and not about. I wanted to watch the movie a long time ago, it’s a classic. I finally succeeded. The impression is rather twofold.
About the quality of this film, and a couple of other films by Edward Wood Jr., I had heard, so I was preparing for anything. I can’t say that I was surprised to see a lot of blunders.
Well, first of all, I'd like to focus on the scenery. As such (in the usual sense of the word) they are only in scenes with White Lugosi. The rest of the interiors of the premises, to put it mildly, do not shine, the walls are monochromatic, there are no bright “spots”.
Special effects. That’s what reminds me of our good today’s films, apparently, the current directors took this style from the notorious Wood: they are, to the point, and not quite. Small episodes that must have been stored for a long time at the film studio are quite well combined with each other and fit (more or less) into the plot, whether it is a running herd of ungulates or lightning.
About acting. I think this aspect is perceived by everyone in their own way. Of course, Bela Lugosi's play is white and definitely a good spot of the picture. The other actors are ordinary people, if I were put in their place, I would play the same.
If you want to know about the plot, then read the title of this review, as this is the first phrase that came to mind after watching the picture. Yes, there is a topic, quite interesting and scandalous at the time, but here is the presentation of it, as they say, to hell. It is clear that Wood wanted to approach this topic from all sides, and it is enough to highlight each side of the problem and draw a general conclusion. Well, I can only say one thing - it turned out quite confused and not always clear.
I agree with Ed Wood’s position that anyone can be an actor, in fact, it is. Moreover, he proved by his example that the film can be made literally on one wish, which, in my opinion, is a lot. Personally, I can’t say that I didn’t like Glen or Glenda at all, no, on the contrary, I would rather watch it than those American comedies that come out in bundles every month, not to mention our Russian Hollywood blockbusters. But I can’t say that I liked this movie, I don’t think I’ll figure out what this movie is for me. One thing is clear: I don’t regret wasting those 65 minutes.
