If you think old movies are boring, just watch Sunset Boulevard. The plot is absolutely stunning: an ordinary guy-writer, who has a lot of debts and problems with collectors, accidentally drives into the garage to a strange lady in a huge mansion. It turns out that this is a former superstar of silent cinema, which a little “rode” on the basis of his past greatness. She hires him to rewrite her crazy script, and the guy ends up in a real gold cage. The story is instantaneous. The dialogue can be broken down into quotes. And the visuals are fantastic. By the way, I would love to see in color how the car would shine and what toilets Norma has. But the coolest thing about the film is how the director mixed the movie with reality. The main character, the same "forgotten queen", plays Gloria Svenssonn - she was a megastar of silent cinema in her life. And her butler Max is played by Erich von Stroheim. This is a separate joke: in reality, he was a great director who once directed Gloria herself! There's a moment in the film where they're watching an old movie together with her, and this is real footage from a movie that Stroheim shot 20 years ago. And Svensson fired Storgheim in the middle of filming. This level of “metairony” is rarely seen. In general, this is a real masterpiece that looks in one breath.
