So pieces or plays? Five Easy Pieces is labeled 5 Light Pieces on one side of the disc and 5 Light Pieces on the other. Since the story is about the musician, we safely dismiss the version with pieces, the more Wikipedia confirms the second version of the translation. The film was filmed in 1970 and starred Jack Nicholson. For this role, he was nominated for an Oscar, which was then given to the indistinct George Scott. In fact, 1970 wasn’t in the movies.
The film can be divided into three parts. In the first part, we see a hard worker Bobby Dupie, who works on oil production, and in the evenings breaks off with strange people. On the 25th minute of the tape, it turns out that Bobby comes from a famous dynasty of musicians who rebelled against family traditions, deciding not to devote himself to any music there. He lives with a stupid woman, friends with a stupid dude, shoots stupid whores. He hates him completely, so he never leaves the thought of escape.
The news of a terminally ill father makes it possible to escape from the annoying south, to the St. Petersburg rainy north of the United States and the narrative smoothly flows into a road movie. This is by the way the most fun part of the film (what only worth the dialogue in the diner about the chicken!). Environmental punks appear in the car, and Bobby himself is still annoyed by his stupid woman.
Leaving the woman in a motel, Bobby arrives at his father’s home – here begins the third part of the film. It finally tells you what, why, and why in this movie, and why Bobby behaves the way he does. (And he behaves badly, even sleeping with a friend of his disabled brother.) )
Bobby Dupie is the most hardened cynic of world cinema. By comparison, Phil Connors himself (Groundhog Day) is the ideal of extraversion and friendliness. I like those roles, and Jack Nicholson doesn’t play anything else. If Comrade Nicholson is removed from the film, then the film from ordinary junk turns into full junk, so I recommend watching only for Nicholson fans.
P. S.: After all, watch the scene in the diner: it is gorgeous – clapped like a child (about the 43rd minute).
