Let’s talk about the problems first.
To begin with, Diana’s whole film is driven by a very strange motivation to get her boyfriend back and then be with him (and overall, it’s an interesting conflict where a superhero has to choose between his personal life and his “responsibility”). And it could still be perceived as normal, if not for the big BUT. Almost 70 years have passed since her boyfriend’s death, and the fact that she still hasn’t let go and hasn’t come to terms with it raises a lot of questions about Wonder Woman’s mental state (the film was made in 2021, not in 1921, to talk about eternal love).
Very strange motivation for the modern film and the second main character / villain – Cheetah. She wants to be beautiful, sexy and likes men. It's weird for a movie that's called feminist. But it is not for me to talk about feminism, so I will just say that this motivation, at least, is not very interesting to observe and it does not cause sympathy.
From what I liked, one can single out the villain performed by Pedro Pascal. He has a very banal but touching relationship with his son. It’s also interesting that he feels like an ordinary person, not a cardboard supervillain who wants to destroy the world to destroy the world. His motivation is simple but understandable: to be rich, successful, respected, and powerful. The concept of the desire stone itself is quite interesting.
Maybe the action in Wonder Woman is very cool and you don’t need to pay attention to the script? Von Mortal Kombat and Godzila vs. Kong also do not shine with the plot, but they perform their blockbuster function. I have bad news. In the film, there are 4 action scenes (15 minutes of action in the blockbuster which is 2:20, just hello): the beginning, where Diana is small; the scene in the mall; the chase in Egypt and the final battle. And it's just the beginning that looks less cool.
The scene in the mall is just about nothing, it is kind of ugly, with a strange choreography.
In the chase scene in Egypt, first, something strange happened to the chromakei, which became visible. Secondly, this scene is more laughter than interest.
The final scene is something incredible. A man who wants to fight underwater at night needs a prize. It's even worse than the worst parts of Transformers where it's not clear what's going on. You can’t see anything, not even in the cinema. I don’t know if the film came out in 3D, where the brightness is usually even lower, but I would look at it.
At this point, you might wonder why I liked it. It’s hard to say for sure, I have a few answers.
The first is that before that, I went to the blockbuster movie (almost six months before), and to the superhero blockbuster more than a year ago. And, of course, it was nice to go back to the movies and watch my favorite superhero.
There’s a second answer, I love superheroics, it’s my favorite genre. And to superhero movies in my head immediately added a few pluses. Even the unloved and recognized failures of the Green Lantern and Defenders (not Sarika Andreasyan, I did not watch them, but from Netflix) I watched not without pleasure.
The third point is the difference in quality between Part 1 and Part 2. I think part of people’s frustration lies in that. The first film is perceived by many as a breakthrough, something incredibly cool and cool, and the contrast of the second seems much worse. It didn’t become a problem for me because I don’t see that much difference between the parts, of course 1 part is more interesting and the action is better. But as an incredible breakthrough, I did not perceive it, and there were enough problems there.
All in all, Wonder Woman 1984 is a movie that has a lot of issues and doesn’t bring anything new to the superhero genre. But despite this, it gives you the opportunity to relax and deliver pleasant emotions.
