The film about Jiang, calm as a herbivorous dinosaur but overweight, begins with a mood close to some light drama. She works as a cook at a junior school whose principal is her mother. He cooks very well and obviously likes to eat. The ease of the beginning of the film gives Jiang the lack of any ambition - the girl is comfortable in her current state and does not care that children call her Dinosaur.
But her mother, Madame Lin (I remember this actress from the role of Miss Keen in the delightful film The Sun), somehow not very comfortable with having such an unrepresentative daughter. From this point on, the conflict of the film begins - who would have thought that by persuading her daughter to go to a weight loss class, Madame Lin will start a process that by the end of the film will go far beyond the problem of obesity.
In the middle of the film, the viewer should focus on how society, through advertising, loved ones and random passers-by, puts pressure on Jiang, encouraging her to “become the best version of herself,” lose weight, and become a “normal” person. Jiang, it seems, really begins to feel the pressure of society only at the moment when there is a person close to her - courier Wu from the delivery service. He tells her that he used to weigh a lot, but now thanks to his efforts has become so slim and attractive. Wu apparently awakens Jiang’s desire to really lose weight. But the young man is not accidentally silent about the methods of losing weight - a story about such methods would not be approved by society.
The key problem uncovered in the film is that for some “abnormal” people, falling into the social standard is tantamount to losing the taste of life and means cutting off a significant part of their personality. But where should we draw the line between "normal" and "non-normal"? Is being overweight and a little boy walking around town in a girl's dress the same thing? The ending of the film, unfortunately, throws to the opposite extreme - accept yourself as you are, and stop working on yourself altogether. This is a very simple conclusion made by a very simple Jiang girl. It would be fine only for herself, but she believes that others will do the same thing as her - rejection of social norms. The film ends on this false note, which, of course, spoils the overall impression of the film, decided to raise very topical questions.
