The film of a completely unfamiliar to me director Leslie Megahi (Irish by birth) “The Hour of the Pig”, made by him back in 1993, but never caught my eye. The story of a medieval lawyer who tries to follow Roman law, but fails in an unequal struggle with the laws of the Inquisition, the right of a nobleman, even with a purchased title, to judge himself. Despite the fact that the director deliberately postponed the time and place of action in such ancient times, and also chose as the main trial of a pig (animals were then tried on a par with people), unjustly accused of killing a boy, it is clear that all this is somewhat allegorical. The main thing is that we see that people have not changed much during all this time, the meanness is the same, the desire to get profit is the same as the ability to take the real culprit away from responsibility if he belongs to the powerful who are disgusting, still lie in the courts, covering them up. The film is very good, although the direction is still a little weak, a lot goes at the expense of good actors and the plot, the author of the script, by the way, is the director himself. But it’s worth seeing, it looks good.
