Sam Peckinpa in the past directed the extremely famous western “Wild Gang”, which, as many say, was the extinction of this genre, in this case from the film made a kind of social drama. This film fully explores the topic of violence in society. The transition from a normal person to a lunatic, if I may put it that way, is perfectly shown. It is shown how the personal qualities of an individual person, in this case David, are destroyed in a particular society. All this is done, of course, very cool, and if at the beginning of the film (or even in the first half of it) you could get a little bored, then by the end everything is spinning like this. It was clear that something had to happen, but to do so...
The main role in this film was played by Dustin Hoffman. And if in the first, calm, half of the film he did not show anything special. I would even say that the image of a closed spectacle mathematician did not suit him, and a hairstyle in the style of John Lennon clearly does not suit him, which made him look ridiculous in places. By the end, the film was just a benefit for one actor. Starting in the middle of the film, when there is a gradual degradation of personality, Hoffman shows a great game, and the last frame of the film to the words “I don’t know where my home is”, he responds: “Me too, buddy” with such mad eyes, looks really great. Also a good female role of Susan George, who in this film played the role of his wife. At least not annoyed, as is often the case with female roles in this kind of film, and thank you.
In general, it turned out to be a great crime drama, I advise all fans of this genre. Perhaps the best role of Dustin Hoffman in a movie. 1971 turned out to be a year of ultra-violence here and the magnificent film “Clockwork Orange” and here, perhaps, is not inferior to him the film “Straw Dogs”, so it is definitely worth watching.
