Do you realize that you can be the new Buster Keaton? Watching the early films of Johnny Depp, ran into this film, which was released before I disliked the picture “What eats Gilbert Grape?” And at first he reminded me of the same Grape, until Depp appeared in the frame.
Benny and June are brother and sister. Benny is a nice young man, he works as a mechanic. June has schizophrenia and needs constant supervision because she always wants to set something on fire. June meets Sam. Sam is charming, but a little strange, and June reaches for him. They fall in love. When Benny finds out, he doesn't like it.
The film is a little unusual, primarily because it does not have typical representatives of the heroes of this genre. They're all a little crazy here. And June, who by definition and by the conclusion of doctors is crazy, and Sam, who constantly pretends to be Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, or other representatives of the comedy direction of the silent era of Hollywood, and Benny, who, at first glance, seems normal, but at heart a real paranoid. As for the first frames of this film and takes, showing, as it were, love between madmen, in a somewhat satirical way. But towards the end, the film slides down to the level of ordinary melodrama, of which there are millions. And June's illness somehow passes, and the director wedges it into the script only when he needs it to make the appropriate ending. In general, they began quite interestingly, and ended corny, creating two contradictory parts from the film.
The cast, by the way, I liked it. Especially Johnny Depp. I watched this film the day after his bland role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, where he played, in my opinion, a bit simple, without any expression, in general, not interesting. And here, on the contrary, cheerful, fun, and so on, in general, made every effort to revive this film, or without his participation in the frame (he appeared only about the twentieth minute of the film), I was completely bored. Well, the rest of the actors, they played simple, but, thank God, no one fell out of the role. Everyone created harmony, but still, soloed in the film Johnny Depp. I’m not saying that’s his outstanding role. In the same "Dead Man" or "Pirates of the Caribbean" he played much better, just in this situation, the film just needed this role. The film is not bad. Of course, Johnny Depp, at the beginning of his acting career, there were no outstanding films, but I liked him more than the film What Eats Gilbert Grape? They're about the same subject, but this one is more lively, fun, and just interesting. Original
