To view the film "Evening" I was prompted by the participation of Meryl Streep, in the first place, as well as her daughter Mamie Gummer and Glenn Close. Here are three reasons why this movie is worth watching. You can admire the most talented actresses Streep and Close for hours, their presence in the picture smooths the overall impression, but still both of them in the film are too few to save the situation. Glenn Close appeared in the frame for a short time, but her presence, of course, decorated him. Her acting is good, and in the moments when her character appeared on the screen, there was really something to watch in the film.
Despite the fact that the role of Meryl Streep is quite small, and she herself appears in the picture half an hour before the end of the film, it is worth it - to see another heroine of the great actress, watch her play (for me there are no films that are not subject to viewing if the incomparable Strip is involved in it) and evaluate the performance of the same heroine (with a difference of several decades) Meryl and her daughter.
I liked Mami, liked her play, I saw the character of her heroine and I really regret that Lila was more of a secondary character, although she played an important role in the development of the main love square of the picture. Of all the characters, it was Lila who impressed me the most, she was emotional, not flat, alive. And personally, I would like her to be given more screen time.
Mamie Gummer perfectly coped with her role, the fate of her character really touched me, and I would look with interest at the development of events, if it is shown from her point of view. I consider it an omission to leave Lila in second roles, because Harris, a hero who battered the hearts of two best friends, she loved for a long time, and the moment came when she came close to the question of whether to marry an unloved person, keeping in her heart tender but unrequited feelings for another. That line was undeservedly hushed up. The same applies to the love story of Buddy, Lila's brother, to Anne Grant.
Hugh Dancy coped well with his role, because like Lila, Buddy is shown to be a living person with his own weaknesses and capable of mistakes. The amazing feature of this film is that the main actors can not boast of the same good performance, which shows the actors performing minor characters.
And here it is worth mentioning the obvious disadvantages of this picture. In the foreground are the relationship of the mentioned heartthrob Harris and the best friend of Lila – Anne, by the way, the main character of the film. I was perplexed by the fact that Anne allowed herself to contact Harris, knowing about Lila's feelings for him. And the most consuming moment was when Anne sang for Lila and held hands with Harris. Perhaps the meaning of this is that people are often indifferent to everything that does not concern themselves, but this episode of honoring the heroine does not. As in principle, the whole history of the relationship of Anne and Harris with an eye on the feelings of Lila.
Speaking of Harris and Anne as a founding couple, I can only say how stupid and flat the relationship is. The couple, according to the plan, should cause aching emotions that cling to life, because this is a story about forbidden feelings and fleeting happiness left in the distant past of the main character, to which she returns in memories before her death. And it could be a really beautiful story, but, alas, in fact we see a completely different “cinema”.
The main problem of the film are the actors selected for the roles of Anne and Harris.
Claire Danes and
Patrick Wilson do not cause any emotions. The heroine of Danes does not have her own character, I was never able to consider her, understand her psychology, see her experiences, feelings. And in the selection of the actor for the role of Harris, I think, made a special mistake.
Patrick Wilson, perhaps, and pleasant externally, but it becomes absolutely irrelevant when it comes to the performance of the role. Harris is a man who attracts the attention of women, two best friends feel for him, and it seems that this type will show himself again, he can not cause such interest for anything. Turns out it might. Nothing but a nice smile is in it. Flat character, none. Traditionally, women fall in love with Harris in movies and in life because they are attracted by their inner self-confidence and the hints of danger that come from them. Men who are able to deliver fleeting happiness and a lot of trouble are a real magnet for many women. However, Harris does not cause the proper emotions. After all, in order to hook, it is not necessary to have an irresistible appearance, the main charisma, charm. And if that's not the case, you're gone. This is exactly the case of the hero Patrick Wilson, except for the fact that in the plot they do fall in love with him. He is faceless, uninteresting, boring, so you can get lost in guesses, because of what, in fact, this character arouses such intense interest, but the answer to this question, in fact, is obvious - bad acting. I also want to mention Danes and Wilson as a duo, both of whom did not play well. The love of Harris and Anne on screen is a complete failure. No chemistry between the characters, no emotions, no energy. One big disappointment. These two are absolutely not interesting, although they should occupy the viewer an overwhelming amount of screen time.
The main idea of the film is to balance right and wrong, to try to figure out whether there is such a thing as mistakes, and whether you should be afraid to make them. This is an interesting idea, but the execution failed.
"Evening" is a rather mediocre film, although exposed in a very pleasant form (wonderful landscapes, wonderful music of Kachmarek and a beautiful picture in principle). The good actors who took part in it (Streep, Close, Gummer, Dancy) do not save him, because they play secondary roles. However, they brightened up the two hours spent watching "Evening." The film is worth watching as long as you are interested in the actors who starred in it, otherwise your time may be wasted. If you want to see a high-quality melodrama, look better
"Bridges of Madison County" (with the same incomparable Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood), this picture will not leave anyone indifferent.
