Helmut Dork, the prototype of which was the popular German clown Karl Schmidt, was repressed and sent to Auschwitz for joking about Hitler. He spent several years in prison, was bullied and, in order not to go crazy, showed his crown numbers to Jewish children. For communicating with outcasts, he was beaten, expelled, but then the commandant of the camp figured out how to use the talents of the artist. He was forced to accompany Jewish children and entertain them on their final journey to death.
