Too normal Max
From the new film about not-Mad Max, I confess, did not expect anything good. Largely thanks to the trailer and reviews, praising action, cars, special effects, but not a word about the quality of the plot. This suggested that the film would be a one-off popcorn spectacle. Fortunately, my fears were not justified. The film was good and special effects, and the plot.
However, the best and most interesting component of the film is a magnificent post-apocalyptic world, thanks to modern technologies, finally received a worthy embodiment. Many science fiction films sin a certain plane - the locations in which the main characters reside, as if hanging in a void and not related to each other. The world of Mad Max does not suffer from such a vice and is sometimes even more interesting than the characters. The dream of the heroes of the semi-mystical “land of mothers”, touching memories of the old woman about the series, a flying satellite, an animal-like tribe of people who appeared in the film for a couple of shots – little things that make up the magnificent, fascinating atmosphere of the deserted Earth.
The plot of the film is somewhat inferior to the atmosphere. It's interesting, dynamic, original - single wives run away from their husbands quite often, but a few wives running away from the local deity and his army, this is already rare. However, the plot has one weak spot. The action is replaced by a lull, the waves of drive overwhelm the viewer with their head and draw him to the inevitable catharsis, when suddenly the look stumbles on some ridiculous little thing, of which there are quite a lot. Sometimes their absurdity can be explained by the peculiarities of the plot. But not everyone, and the explanation will be far-fetched. For example, a crowd of half-naked girls pouring water on each other from a hose in the desert, where water is one of the most expensive things, can be explained by the fact that they grew up in abundance, and they do not know the phenomenon of water scarcity. But for huge trucks and incredibly powerful engines, in a world where gasoline is more expensive than water, it is already more difficult to find a logical explanation. These are little things.
The biggest problem is Max himself. Taken out in the title of the film and declared as the main character, on the screen he looks like an episodic character who accidentally broke out in the first rows. The world has found a new incarnation, the characters have become more vivid and spelled out, but Max has remained the same. He's like a guest from the past, cut from the action movies of the 80s and pasted into a modern film - harsh, silent, by default cool and absolutely uninteresting. Wonderful Furios more fits the definition of the main character - she has a goal that she achieves in the final, the plot is tied to her interests, which can not be said about the Mask, which throughout the film trails her like a walking scenery.
However, the characters in the film are one of his greatest strengths. Bright, thoughtful, interesting and perfectly fit into the atmosphere of the post-apocalypse. It is also good that they are not divided into good and bad. Each character is shown from different sides. Like, for example, the magnificent antagonist Immortal Joe is a cruel tyrant who has built a cult around him, and at the same time treats his pregnant wife with such tenderness. Due to this, even the plane of the title character has little effect on the overall impression of the film.
This is a good drive action movie, a great replacement for the not yet dead, but the orderly handed over the Furious. The new film breathes new life into the franchise. Many bright characters and a developed world set the stage for numerous sequels, and the commercial success of the film makes it clear that they are sure to be. Which I'm looking forward to.
