The famous atheist, skeptic and humanist Clinton Richard Dawkins was born on March 26, 1941 in Nairobi, Kenya. Dawkins’s passion for science was raised by his parents. Richard Dawkins had doubts about the existence of God since early childhood. His childhood was Anglican and he did consider himself a Christian, but over time he preferred to believe in evolution rather than a higher power. Richard's studies at Billiol College, Oxford, were mentored by Nicolaas Tinbergen. In 1962, Dawkins graduated from college, but continued his studies. Richard received his Ph.D. in 1966. He did a lot of research on animal behavior.
Until 1969, Richard Dawkins worked as an assistant professor of zoology at the University of California, Berkeley. He participated in anti-war demonstrations during the Vietnam War. In 1970, Richard Dawkins returned to Oxford as a lecturer, and 20 years later became a professor of zoology. In 2008, Richard Dawkins resigned as a professor. In 2011, he became a professor at the New Humanities College, which Anton Grayling founded. It is scheduled to open in autumn 2012.
Dawkins gained popularity as a writer in 1976 after the release of his book The Selfish Gene, in which he looked at evolution from a gene perspective. In 1982, he published another book, The Expanded Phenotype, where he proved that the phenotypic effects of a gene extend to its habitat, affecting other individuals. Richard Dawkins is the author of a number of books, essays and other works. In 1987, he received the Royal Society of Literature Award for his book The Blind Watchmaker. He has a PhD and honorary degrees from many universities. An asteroid was named after him.
