Born in Dobrichina (Galicia). He graduated from the Berlin Institute of Psychoanalysis, and in 1924 began working at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Institute. In 1927 he published his first major work, The Function of Orgasm. In 1933 he emigrated, lived in Scandinavia, and in 1939 settled in the United States.
