One of Sweden’s most famous children’s writers, Annika Thor, was born in Gothenburg to a Jewish family. It happened in 1950. Thor then moved to Stockholm, where she now lives with her family.
At first, Annika tried herself in various professions close to creativity. She was a librarian, secretary of culture. But then the craving for writing prevailed. In 1996, Annika Thor’s first book was published. It was called “Island in the Sea” and told about the difficult lives of two Jewish refugee girls, Steffi and Nelly. In the story, they came to the Gothenburg skerries from Vienna, fleeing the persecution of the Nazis.
For this novel, Thor received the prestigious August Prize for Best Book for Children and Youth in 1996. The jury then noted that the author portrayed the fate of the sisters touchingly, but tolerantly, authentically and penetratingly, without unnecessary sentiment.
Soon Thor created a sequel to “Island in the Sea” – the book “Pond of White Lilies”. Steffi continues his studies and meets his first love. Then came the third and fourth parts – “Deep Sea” and “Open Sea”. Based on these books, a series was shot, which was successfully held on Swedish television.
Annika Thor wrote many more books, received a number of prestigious literary awards, both national and international. She is also the author of scripts for children's and youth films.
