Adelbert von Chamisso (Louis Charles Adelaide de Chamisso) was born on January 30, 1781 in the castle of Boncourt in Champagne (France), in the family of Lorraine aristocrats. In 1790, his parents fled revolutionary France to Germany. Chamisso served as an officer of the Prussian army in 1801-1806 and studied botany, zoology, and medicine in Berlin in 1812-1815. Adelbert von Chamisso (Louis Charles Adelaide de Chamisso) was born on January 30, 1781 in the castle of Boncourt in Champagne (France), in the family of Lorraine aristocrats. In 1790, his parents fled revolutionary France to Germany. Chamisso served as an officer of the Prussian army in 1801-1806 and studied botany, zoology, and medicine in Berlin in 1812-1815. In 1815-1818 he took part in the Russian round-the-world expedition on the brig "Rürik", on his return from the voyage he took the post of adjunct of the Royal Botanical Garden in Berlin. In 1834-1836, Chamisso published his report on this expedition - "Journey around the world", which became an example of the genre of travel essays. The most famous work of fiction of the writer is the story “The extraordinary story of Peter Schlemil” (1814) about a man who exchanged his shadow for an empty purse and was unhappy all his life. Shamisso also owns poems, including translations and imitations of Beranger, the poem “Exiles” (1831), the cycle “Love and the life of a woman” (1830). The last work was set to music in 1840 by R. Schumann. He died in Berlin on 21 August 1838.
