As a teenager, Billy Dee entered the prestigious Higher School of Music and Drama in New York. Then he studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts, and later at the theater studio in Gardem near Sydney Poitiers.
Billy Dee returned to Broadway, somewhere along the way managed to act in a movie, but it was almost ten years before he was invited to the next film. He became a movie star after playing with Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues in 1972. Billy Dee Williams was referred to as “Black Clark Gable.”
In the early 80s, the fame of Billy Dee began to fade, but then George Lucas came to his aid, inviting the actor to play Lando in the fifth and sixth episodes of Star Wars -
"The Empire Strikes Back" and
"Return of the Jedi".
