David Cronenberg was born in Toronto in 1943. His father owned a bookstore and wrote a column for the Toronto Telegraph. His mother was a musician and accompanied him on the piano at the National Ballet. His parents considered it necessary to give the boy a classical university education, and after graduating from school, David entered the University of Toronto. While still a student, David Cronenberg tried his hand at directing – he made two short films. His first "serious" film "Abomination" was presented to the audience in 1975 and was a commercial success. A few years later, Cronenberg shot another one. Videodrome Critics called it the model of the decade.

The last years of the twentieth century, David Cronenberg dedicated films in the genre of “body-horror”. Literally translated, it means “body terror.” These are fantastic tapes about mutations of the human body. Between the concepts of normal and abnormal, the border is very shaky, says the director in his films.
In 1999, David Cronenberg’s film Existence was released, which received the Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival. This film is somewhat less known to the public than the famous “Matrix”, although it was released a few months earlier. These films are similar to philosophical problems. The director moved from the study of body ugliness to the study of abnormalities in society. In the same year, Cronenberg headed the Cannes Film Festival.
