Wolfgang Petersen was born on March 14, 1941 in Emden, Germany. He began his career at the age of 19 as an assistant director at Hamburg’s Ernst Deutsh Theater. He graduated from the Berlin Academy of Television and Film. He then worked on television, and in 1973 made his film debut with the film One of the Two, which won the German National Film Award for Best Director.
