Alan J. Pakula was born on April 7, 1928 in New York City. He received his education at Yale Drama School. He began working in the film industry in 1949 at Warner Bros., in the animated film division, as an assistant producer, and soon produced the psychological drama Fear Strikes. It was the first of seven films he created in collaboration with director Robert Mulligan, among which were To Kill a Mockingbird, Up the Staircase Leading Down.
