The first success of the director in children's cinema was the fairy-tale film "Finist - Clear Falcon" staged in 1976, which was awarded at the international film festival in Gijon. Heroes of epics and fairy tales have repeatedly appeared in his films - "Vasily Buslaev" (1982), "The Black Prince of Ajuba" (1988), but, perhaps, no less beloved and popular with the young viewer were the characters of the comedy and adventure film "New Adventures of Captain Vrungel" and the plots of the humorous film magazine "Yeralash". In 1985, G. Vasiliev first turned to the genre of historical film, filming the novel by V. Ivanov “Primordial Rus”, and in 1991, another film on the theme of Russian history – “Tsar Ivan the Terrible” was released. In 1997, together with Chinese filmmakers, Gennady Vasilyev shot a fairy tale film "Magic Portrait".
