He first appeared in small roles at the New York Shakespeare Festival, as well as in several small provincial theaters. In 1984, Smits played partner Don Johnson in the pilot of Miami Police, after which the actor began to appear in television series. Among his early works are the comedy Fright Runner, filmed in 1986, and, of course, the series Los Angeles Police. His first film work was the 1989 film Old Gringo, in which Smith played a young Mexican general. Despite the good cast (the main roles in the film were played by Jane Fonda and Gregory Peck) and positive reviews of critics, the film was unprofitable. Filmed two years later, the film “Kara heavenly” critics met coolly. Smits returned to work on TV: he starred in a miniseries based on the book by S. King “Tomminokers”, and since 1994 he played in the series “NYPD Blue”, a kind of “police drama”.
