Martin Campbell was born and raised in Hastings, New Zealand. In 1966, he moved to the UK, where he began working as a television cameraman. In 1973, he made his debut as a director, directing the erotic thriller Sex Thief. He subsequently worked on the British police series Bergerak and The Professionals, and also produced Black Joy (1977, Anthony Simmons) and Dumpster (1979, Alan Clarke). Among his subsequent directorial projects, the most interesting was the television series Reilly: King of Spies (1983) starring actor Sam Neal, and his first major success came with the thriller On the Edge of Darkness (1986), for which he was awarded the British Academy of Film and Television Award. In the second half of the eighties, Campbell began working in the United States, putting there thrillers “Pulp Law” (1989) with Gary Oldman and Kevin Bacon and “Defenseless” (1991) with Barbara Hershey and Sam Shepard. Following the futuristic action film Escape Is Impossible (1994), Campbell shot Golden Eye (1995) with Pierce Brosnan in the title role, which became the seventeenth film about the adventures of secret agent James Bond. Quite spectacular was his next work - made with a Hollywood scale wide-budget adventure "Mask Zorro" (1998) with the participation of Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The film was a huge audience success and seven years later Campbell returned to this plot, putting the sequel to this picture “The Legend of Zorro” (2005).
In the new millennium, the director shot the special-effects-rich adventure blockbuster “Vertical Limit” (2000) and the romantic melodrama “Beyond the Edge” (2003), which starred Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen. After "The Legend of Zorro", Campbell again turned to the genre of film bonding, putting another film of this series "Casino Royale" (2006), this time with Daniel Craig in the title role.
