He was born in the village of Klavdino, Leningrad region. In 1947-1949 he worked at the Moscow Metalloizdii plant. In 1954 he graduated from the camera faculty of VGIK (the workshop of A. Galperin). Since 1954 - assistant operator, since 1957 - operator-director of the film studio "Mosfilm". Teacher of VGIK, since 1983 - Head of the Department of Cinematography. George Daneliya ("I walk through Moscow", "Do not grie!", "All lost", "Passport") and
Ivan Dikhovichny ("Breach"). He was the cameraman of the films: “Julia Vrevskaya”, “Anna from 6 to 18”, “Out of modernity”, etc.
