As a child, he attended a Quaker school in Reading, and then transferred to an art school. Realizing that acting attracted him the most, he entered the London Academy of Musical and Dramatic Arts. After successfully graduating in 1972, Jim began acting in performances at the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre and the Brent National Theatre. At the same time, he worked on television with directors such as Mike Newell and Stephen Frears.
In 1978, Broadbent made his film debut in Scream, then he played small roles in the films Strike, Time Bandits and Brazil. But international success brought him cooperation with director Mike Lee. He directed Broadbent in the 1990 comedy Life is Sweet and in the 1999 film Cutterma. For the role of William Gilbert, he was awarded the prize of the Venice Film Festival as the best actor.
