Henry Kenneth Alfred Russell was born on July 3, 1927 in Southampton, England. He was going to make a career as a sailor, but after serving in the army during the war and in the merchant fleet after it, he changed his preferences and went to ballet. His passion for photography and acting classes Russell tried his hand at film directing. He was eventually hired as an Air Force recruit. In the first half of the 60s, Russell made a name for himself (and this name was not always used with respect). He made a series of films about the lives of famous composers and dancers. Since 1969, Russell was recognized by the international film community when he made the film “Women in Love” based on the novel by D. Lawrence. At the time, hardly anyone had noticed a "mainstream" director whose film would feature a nude couple wrestling, so Russell became a "star" even more than his actors. Russell’s next film – “The Music Lovers” – about Peter and Nina Tchaikovsky, in which Ken considered this couple as a homosexual and a nifmoman, only strengthened the scandalous reputation of the director. Russell continued to shock the public until the 80s, when everything that seemed avant-garde and outrageous in his films began to enter the norm of cinema.
