James Ivory was born in Berkeley, California on June 7, 1928, to an Irish father and a French mother. Since his youth, he decided to connect his fate with cinema, so he studied clearly on the profile at the University of Oregon and the Film School of the University of Southern California.
Ivory began his career in documentary film, working extensively in India. In 1961, together with his friend Ismail Merchanton, he created the film company Merchant-Ivory Productions, which specialized in the film adaptation of classics of the early XX century. In 1962, their work led to the release of The Householder, and then Shakespeare Wallach (1965), which attracted special attention.
The peculiar directorial style of James Ivory is distinguished by special academicism, accuracy of images and thoughtful recreation of details of past events. His paintings were always competently stylized and created by a well-chosen cast. According to some film critics, Ivory’s work was typical of “English aristocracy”, despite the fact that he is a director of American origin.
All his films were made in this style, some of which were based on classical literature. The director especially loved the books of representatives of Anglo-American psychological realism, the plots of which he used more than once when working on his films. Among the films related to this description are Europeans (1979) and Bostonians (1984), which were based on the works of Henry James. Based on the novel by E. M. Foster was removed work
"Room with a view" (1985), which received eight Oscar nominations.
Over the entire history of his creative career, James Ivory has shot more than three dozen films, more than once being awarded world film awards. /
