He then continued his studies at Oxford, but due to disagreements with his supervisor, he left him without obtaining a degree.

In 1969, after returning to the United States, Malik taught philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the same year, Malik became a student at the American Film Institute, where he received a master’s degree in fine arts. Malik's directorial debut was a film "Wastes" (1973).
