Currently, Hiroyuki Sanada is considered one of the most gifted Japanese actors. In 1999-2000, he played the Jester in the English-language production of King Lear, along with artists of the Royal Shakespeare Company, becoming the first Japanese on this stage. For this work, he was awarded an honorary award - he became a member of the Order of the British Empire.
