Jim Sheridan is a renowned producer, director and screenwriter who was born on February 6, 1949 in Dublin, Ireland. He graduated from high school in Ireland, then went to college in Dublin, and then emigrated to Canada and then to the United States.
In 1989, Jim's first work as a director was released - a biographical drama called
"My left leg" . The film is based on the amazing achievements of a courageous Irish disabled man named Christie Brown. The man has cerebral palsy. Until he learns to draw pictures and paint with his left toes, he seems to be an inferior person. This story caught the attention of the public. The film received five Oscar nominations, two of which were Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress.
After his debut, Jim starred in a 1990 drama film called The Field. This is a picture of Irish tenant farmers who may lose their land. The war for possessions is being waged very harshly, as if the stake were life. The main role was played by Richard Harris. He was remembered by the audience for his vivid play, which determined the drama of the whole picture.
All the next works of the director turned out to be very strong and original. In the Name of the Father is a drama based on a true story – the memories of an Irishman who spent fifteen years in prison for crimes committed. Another significant picture – sports drama “Boxer” – tells about the attempt of the former boxer, who recently returned from prison, to start his life anew, rebuild the gym and start teaching boys boxing.
In 2002, Sheridan shot the film In America, the main characters of which were the Irish who came to New York for a better life.
