Antonio Saura (born September 22, 1930 in Huesca – died July 22, 1998 in Cuenca) was a Spanish painter, book illustrator, graphic artist, one of the largest post-war painters in Spain, whose work influenced several generations of artists. He began painting in his youth, having been bedridden for five years due to tuberculosis, and creating paintings with a fabulous, surreal focus. He began painting in his youth, having been bedridden for five years due to tuberculosis, and creating paintings with a fabulous, surreal focus. In 1950 he held his first exhibition in Zaragoza and a year later in Madrid. In 1954, the artist settled in Paris, where he became actively involved in the activities of the Surrealists.
Antonio Sur’s fame grew with the ever-expanding geography of his exhibitions. With the development of his career, his work was already shown on the sites of the leading museums in the world, and his work received several prestigious awards, including the Guggenheim Prize.
