The famous director was born on August 25, 1939 in the English town of Luton. His mother was an actress and his father a military general. In 1945, their family moved to the United States. The director has been married three times and has one child.
The director made a name for himself in the seventies, working extensively on television, including the television series San Francisco Street and Police Story.
John studied at the Yale School of Dramatic Arts in the philosophy department. In 1962, he decided to move to Hollywood when his ten-year-old sister Mary received an Oscar nomination for her role in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Bedham began to work in the letters department of Universal Studios, then as a studio guide, and finally in the casting department.
He soon became an assistant to veteran producer William Sackheim. John was first credited as an assistant director in an episode of the television series The Night Gallery (1969), directed by Steven Spielberg, and starred Joan Crawford.
In 1983, Badham managed to shoot the two biggest hits of the summer season, War Games and Blue Thunder, almost simultaneously. In 1988, he formed his own company with director Rob Cohen.
John has not worked with his sister in any of his films. But Bedham loves to shoot Richard Dreyfus.
The Academy of Fantasy Films, Fantasy and Horror Films of the USA presented Bedham with its Saturn Prize for Best Director of the War Games (1983), and in 1980 awarded the George Pal Honorary Prize. The director also received two nominations for Saturn: for Best Director of Dracula (1979) and Short Circuit (1986).
At the Temecula Valley International Film Festival in 2005, Badham was awarded an honorary career achievement prize.
Badham has two Emmy Award nominations for directing The Bold Ones: The Senator (1971) and The Law (1974).
