Born in Japan, Kobe. A talented Japanese actor, born Makato Iwamatsu, who came to the States in the late 1940s and studied architecture until he became interested in theater and did not want to become an actor. He debuted in a small role in Never So Little (1959), received a nomination for Best Second Actor as a Engine Room Mechanic (and Boxing Champion) in Sand Pebbles (1966) and also appeared in Sergeant O'Farrell's Private Fleet (1966). He starred in such films as The Big Bank Robbery (1969), Hawaiian Island at the Top of the World (1974), Killer Elite (1975), Conan the Barbarian (1982), Testament (1983), Conan the Destroyer (1984), Tucker: A Man and His Dream (1988), Pacific Heights, Beautiful Life (both in 1990), The Rising Sun and Robocop 3 (both in 1993) as a Batman (1986) and a Batman with a Militant Gun (1988) and a Batman with a Black Gun (1988) In addition to numerous works for TV Mako also earned a Tony nomination for his contribution to the "Pacific Overtures" of the musical Stephen Sonheim (1976) and was a member of the Los Angeles theater troupe East West Players, of which he co-founded in the 1960s. The career of a great actor and karate player does not stand still - his last role in Pearl Harbor (2001).
