After defending his doctorate, he became a professor at the University of Nice, later a lecturer at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris.
In the 1970s he was also a columnist for the newspaper L'Express for ten years. All his life he was quite active in politics, until 1956 he was a communist, until he joined the socialist party, which he also left in 1992-1993, founding his own party.
Gallo is known as the author of numerous novels, mainly historical.
